Clementina Caputo and Julia Lougovaya, Using Ostraca in the Ancient World

This remarkable volume provides the richest introduction ever offered to one of most widespread but understudied writing technologies ancient world. Like many such categories, ostraca are a somewhat fuzzy set, and term “ostracon” is often used imprecisely. Properly speaking, ostracon potsherd or, sometimes, piece stone, in secondary use (i.e., not its original purpose) as surface. But various other objects get included from time because they do form recognized category their own, on pottery part primary vessel sometimes distinguished jar inscriptions not. Ostraca were for long treated with disdain or positive horror by papyrologists, have increasingly come into own; this set chapters, based conference, represents kind coming age study ostraca.
